- Region 3 Wins double GOLD at Regional Games!

"This will be one of my most memorable summers for ever" I think to myself as I am writing this article. Why you may ask? It is because of the things I did, the things I learned, and the friends I made from playing Region 3 Volleyball. This is why the summer of 2009 will be the most memorable.
In the middle of June 2009, I decided to tryout for the Region 3 Team in my hometown of London, Ontario. When I got to the tryout, I surveyed the rest of the people there. Most of them I had seen before but by only playing against them in the club season. It was going to be tough to make the team because all of the players had tremendous ability and were good volleyball players. By the end of the day, the tryout format had contributed to all of the players giving their all. When I was notified that I had made the team, I was very excited because I knew that I would be playing with people that really loved and were committed to the game of volleyball.
When I accepted the position, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Our coaches Barrett Schitka and Shawn Lippert, were two of the best coaches I have ever had. They had such a positive energy around them that we wanted to work hard at everything we did. They had a unique coaching style and instead of expecting the team to just obey them, encouraged us to ask questions about what we were doing and supported us in making goals, improving our own skills and our team skills. At the end of every practice, we felt like we had accomplished something.
Our team practiced all through July, usually in Waterloo, Chatham or London and with this opportunity we bonded as a team very quickly. One teambuilding experience we went through was when we got to play against the Fanshawe Falcons. As we walked into the gym, all we saw were huge college players that could probably hit the volleyball to the roof after a spike. Yes, we were intimidated, but not scared. We learned to trust each other and to have confidence in our abilities through the guidance of our coaches.
By the time the Regional Team Training Center rolled around, we knew we all had the skills that would allow us to go far. This is where we decided that our team goal was to "go for the gold." This goal drove us to try and do our best at the camp. The trainers taught me many new skills such as "Know before you go" and "Turn and Burn." I also learned about the value of good nutrition in sports and how important taking time to recover after playing is. The Region 3 team became unified through our yoga, mental preparation, visualization and team warm up sessions. Our team even did a lot of activities in the evening together after our volleyball sessions were done. I can still remember playing "Mafia" and other games and laughing so much. We committed to doing everything together to allow us to become closer. This set us apart from all the other skilled players at the RTTC.
At the Regional games, we followed our game plan itinerary set up by the coaches as "win-win-win". Although we had one bump along the way when we lost to Region 5 in the pool play, this loss drove us even more to want to win the gold. When we found out that we would be facing them in the final, we knew it would be a close game. I can still see the final point of the third set in my mind. It was 14-13 for us with Region 5 serving, the parents were cheering wearing their purple clothing to support us. Our libero gave a perfect pass to our setter who then sent it out to the power for the slam off the block for the game point. Everyone on the bench came running out onto the court yelling and screaming "TOOL!" What a way to end the two days of playing.
This one goal of getting to the gold medal was made possible from our training and our belief in one and other. We truly became a unified team at the Regional Games. We could not have done it without everyone on the team doing their best and without the coaches and the support of our parents. Along with the volleyball skills we were taught, we also learned the importance of working cooperatively with people, trusting one other, and making small goals to achieve the main goal. I will always remember my teammates and the things that I have learned from my coaches. And that's why it has been one of my most memorable summers ever. Go purple! Go Region 3!

- Region 3 Purple (Girls) play strong but settle for 4th!

The region 3 purple squad had a great camp and a great showing in the tournament. At the camp the girls learned a ton from
some high quality University coaches and had a blast with their team through out the weekend.
For the tournament 3B came in ranked second and wanted to show they deserved that ranking by playing some great volleyball on the first day of competition. In the first match of the tournament at 8am on the Monday the team faced Region 1 and came out on fire winning 25-6, 25-12. Kailey Houston lead the offense with 6 aces and 16 straight points from the service line. Some great passing from Katie Mclay helped Robyn Misener and Emily Durand run an offense that could not be stopped.
In the second match, the team faced region 4b and once again they came out strong and won 25-13, 25-17. The team was led at the net by Sarah James, Allyssah Fitterer, Maggie Darling and Candace Scott racking up 10 blocks and 10 kills between them.
In the 3rd match the girls faced region 5 and once again came out strong winning 25-13, 25-22. The team was led by beach partners Sydney Krizmanich and Nova Bozinoski who combined for 10 on 15 attempts.
In the final match of the day the girls played region 6 and came out on fire winning 25-16, 25-17. The team effort here was awesome and the entire team won this one together combining for only 6 unforced errors during the match. With that win the team received a bye to the semifinals.
In the second day of competition the team had to face the other region 3 team and both teams seemed quite excited to prove themselves. In the first game, of the match our team took it to 3A winning 25-22 and the 2nd game came up just short at 23-25. This put the girls in an odd position as they had not played a game 3 yet. They came out a little nervous and 3A ran with it as it was their 4th straight game 3 situation. Nicole Arthurs and Dannielle Fournier had tough assignments and came out with 8 blocks between them and 6 kills.
In the bronze medal the girls seemed to be emotional drained and had a tough time with region 4 losing two straight 25-15, 25-15. With that the team finished 4th for the two day event.
It was a great tournament and the coaching staff and the region can walk away very proud of the result and effort.
